Porting Your Number
“Porting” refers to transferring your telephone number from one providers network to another. Common examples of this are porting numbers from BT to Virgin or Talk Talk. The cost of porting a number between analogue or ISDN suppliers is £109.99 on average. The other example of porting is to a VOIP network which is considerably cheaper.
Porting is a simple process: a request to take ownership of your number is sent to your current provider. If you current provider does not object to this (for example you are still in contract), then your number is taken over by your new provider on a date which you will be notified of in advance.
Once this ownership changes, your service and agreement with your old provider will automatically end. You should NEVER transfer your number to a VOIP provider if you have a line that carries BOTH broadband and phone line. This is due to the fact that once the phone number is ported away, then the broadband connection will cease.
If you only have one line with phone and broadband active and want to move this number to VOIP, then you must setup a new line with broadband before this happens. The requirement to do this is often seen for businesses up-scaling their telephony requirements, but less so with smaller businesses who only need 1 line.
If you are looking for an additional line, you can find some great information on our site.
Any porting transfers or new broadband connections are handled by Saffwood to ensure a swift, safe transfer. Our service engineers are PRINCE2 qualified for project management, so you are in safe hands.
We are setup to port numbers, both geographic and non geographic, from virtually all major carriers. It’s important to differentiate between a supplier (say Chess Telecom, Titan Telecom etc) and a carrier (BT, Talk Talk, Virgin).
